SHAKESPEARE'S THEATRE
Shakespeare's Globe was rather different from modern theatres. The plays were performed in the open air and A22_______________ got wet if it rained.

Women in those days were not allowed to act in public and all the parts (even Juliet!) were played by men.

… Last week I bought a very expensive mobile phone. You know, I can’t imagine my life without it. Mobile phones are convenient, reliable in use and very small in size. But my parents think it does harm to young children and teenagers. I don’t think it’s true. How often do you use a mobile phone? What do your parents think about it? Is it a good idea to have a mobile phone with you everywhere, even in school?

I also like to play computer games. My parents have just made me a present of a new game. It’s fantastic. If you want I could tell you all about it in my next letter.

Why are so many people now running in marathons? For the last ten years or so they have been on a physical fitness kick and perhaps the most striking evidence is the boom in running. One very special result of the new craze has been the explosion of interest and participation in marathons. There are no health benefits to be derived from running more than about six miles, but to be able to say that one has finished a marathon is still something special.
Speaker 2

You need to be physically strong to be a good driver. But the biggest thing is not actually physical strength, but mental stamina and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time. There aren't many women in motor racing and they have never been encouraged to join, but there's no reason why they can't do it as well as men can. Like most things I suppose it's just a question of time.

Street hockey is fast and fun, and you don't need any ice! It's popular in the US because you can play it all year and in lots of places: car parks, basketball courts, empty streets... You wear tennis shoes, not ice skates. And you can use a ball or a puck. But the tactics and rules are similar. Professional ice-hockey teams sponsor street hockey for young people. So the teens get great equipment and uniforms. And the ice-hockey teams get future fans. Everybody wins!

Surfing is popular all over the world. It's practised on lakes and rivers, seas and oceans – anywhere with good wind. Some people think that it's a new kind of sport. But it is not. It was first reported by the British explorer Captain Cook in 1778. It became popular with the introduction of mass-produced, lightweight boards made of fibreglass in the 1960s. The best time for surfing is when the waves are high. Serious surfers must be very brave, love adventure and have lots of energy.

Football, which is the most favorite sport in the USA, is different from both soccer and rugby. First of all, the ball isn't round but egg-shaped with pointed ends. Secondly, the goal posts look like the letter H. And, of course, the rules of the game are different. You can kick, pass (throw) and run with the ball. You can also grab other players. That's called tackling them. The key player on each team is the quarterback: he decides whether to pass, throw or kick the ball.

Speaker 6

There are two types of baseball – softball and hardball. The ball is softer, of course, and slightly larger for softball. So, professionals play hardball, but children and adults play softball for fun. The ball is hit with a bat. One player has the bat while the rest of his team wait. He is the batter and his team is up at bat. The other team is out in the field. There are nine players on every team, enough to cover the field.

Jane: Yes, Peter, we usually switch on for the ten o'clock news when we are in, and it seems to stay on after that till we go to bed.

Peter: I see you are used to listening to concerts late at night.

Jane: Sometimes, when there is a concert that we like, though we don't like anything too classical. We don't mind listening to those programmes where experts answer questions on various subjects sent in by listeners either. The talk shows after the news are also great fun. I’m always amused when I hear people talk about their family problems. I have my own theory about how to get on with my husband and children. He is sometimes in a bad mood, and the children can be very naughty.

Peter: I can’t complain about my family. We are good friends and we have similar tastes, though I’ve got to show them sometimes who’s the boss. My wife says she often has the radio on during the day while she is doing her housework. In her words, it keeps her company. She has even listened to the school broadcasts and learnt quite a few interesting things.

Jane: You know, Peter, my husband would prefer to watch TV, but he says he wouldn't be able to do any work at all then.

Peter: You can hardly escape from the radio here. They are switched on early in the morning and go on all day as a permanent background noise. Every few minutes the programme is interrupted to give advertising of something.
